Starting at the age of 40 the natural lens looses it’s flexibility (presbyopia) which results in the need for reading glasses. It can be treated surgically with monovision or implantation of multifocal IOL.
Due to corneal weakening the vision becomes blurry. Through crosslinking (Application of Vitamin B2 and UV irradiation) the cornea becomes stiffer and the bulging of the cornea can be stopped.
As an alternative to laser eye surgery the natural lens can be replaced (RLA) with modern implants (IOLs) or an additional implant to the natural lens (phakic IOL) can be inserted into the eye.

During FEMTO-LASIK Method, also called all laser-lasik all the visual default is corrected with precise lasers. In contrary to conventional lasik, where a mechanical blade is used. Through this technology an increased precision and decreased complication rate could be acheived.
The femto-laser cuts more precise and it means that corneal tissue is spared or higher diopter corrections are possible.

LASIK, the classical way of laser vision correction, available since 1991. After an initial flap creation (microkeratome) the vision correction is performed with the excimer laser inside the cornea.
The modern way of classical LASIK is the FEMTO-LASIK method.

LASEK / PRK is the oldest method of laser eye surgery. The superficial corneal cell layer is taken off followed by excimer laser treatement. After the surgery a protective contact lens is inserted into the eye. Following 2-4 days the superficial cell layer (regenerative) growes again over the transparent cornea and the vision starts to improve.

If laser eye surgery is not possible, mostly the lens surgery can be performed (ex. higher visual defaults, thin or irregular cornea, cataract). The natural lens can be replaced (refractive lens exchange) or an additional lens can be inserted into the eye (phakic IOL).
